Your definition of glamping may be different from mine, and the next guys will be different, and the next, and so on. To me, glamping is a hybrid of camping, it doesn’t require sleeping on the ground or using nature as an outhouse, however it does require completely unplugging, being enveloped by nature’s natural serenity and the opportunity to recharge and reconnect with family, friends and yourself. Many, I’m told, share this definition.
Given these loose perimeters, combining a little bit of glamour, with a little bit of camp, I’ve come up with some great places on the Connecticut Coast, and beyond, where a non-camping camper can go to glamp it up.
Location, location, location doesn’t just apply to real estate, it also applies to glamping. Scenery is number one! Which is why both Rocky Neck State Park, in Niantic and Hammonassette State Park, in Madison have made the glamp list. They both offer cabins to camp in. Perfection! Beach, beauty, nature and a floor, this is my kind of place.
Rustic Cabin Rentals, at both beaches, are available. For some, this would not be considered glamping at all because there is very little glamour within the four walls of these cabins, but they fit my criteria; there are walls, beds and a bathroom. No luxurious bedding or dimly lit fireplaces, complete with romantic ambiance and Zen like décor but, it beats sleeping on tree roots and waking up to moist tent walls. These rustic cabins supply visitors with the opportunity to get away from it all, wake up near the beach and explore nature at its best. Offering miles of sandy dunes and beaches to walk on, nature trails to traverse, wild animals to observe and an abundant amount of shorebirds to photograph, both spots are a great way to glamp it up without breaking the bank or traveling too far away from the ideals of what camping is all about. And the sunsets…not too shabby! For more information, Click here.
Looking more for an in the woods feeling? Try heading over to Mystic KOA, in North Stonington where they offer deluxe cabins, as well as camping cabins.
Deluxe Cabins have a full bath, tub and shower, as well as, a partial kitchen, queen bed, bunk bed, patio, porch and Adirondack chairs to rest in after a busy day of hiking or relaxing, your choice. The Camping Cabins are a little rougher; four walls, full bed and bunk bed, no bathroom or kitchen.
Both abodes are nestled quaintly under a canopy of 100-year-old tree stands, surrounded by quintessential New England stone walls, with a backdrop of rolling hills and peaceful forests. Close to the hustle and bustle of downtown Mystic, but far enough away to be one with the wilderness. This is a place where memories are made and traditions begin. For more information, Click here.
True glamourous glampers have to head a little inland, to the Litchfield Hills, where Winvian Farms has truly made glamping their calling. Among others, guests can choose from the Charter Oak, the Beaver Lodge, the Connecticut Yankee, the Maritime, the Log Cabin, the Stable or the Treehouse, which is set 35 feet above the forest floor. Each single standing structure is equally appointed with a healthy infusion of high-end natural tranquility and extraordinary panache.
