The inspectors of AAA—who intrepidly rate hotels and restaurants throughout North America and adjacent regions—have handed down their coveted ratings for hotels and restaurants. So who has been showered with AAA Diamonds in Connecticut?
The area’s only AAA Five Diamond lodging, per AAA Northeast, is Winvian Farm in Litchfield. The rarified retreat is composed of 18 unique luxury cabins with intriguing and sometimes whimsical themes, including “Artist,” “Golf,” “Log Cabin” and even “Helicopter” which warrants an explanation.
Here’s Winvian’s own description of that suite: “A fully-restored 1968 Sikorsky Sea King Pelican HH3F helicopter is ready to rescue you. This amazing Coast Guard chopper stands at the center of a unique cottage, its rotor blades embedded in the ceiling (flights of fancy only!). The originals are here: pilot and co-pilot seats, switches, gauges – with modern updates such as a mod sofa and flat screen TV.
Take your cocktails in the cockpit, watch a film in the fuselage, relax by a glowing woodstove, and sleep in the cloud-soft king-sized bed outside the helicopter. Stylish, fun, and totally aerodynamic.”
There was more competition in the Four-Diamond category. In its territory (including Fairfield, Litchfield and New Haven counties, plus the village of Pawcatuck), AAA Northeast awarded Four Diamonds each to The Homestead Inn in Greenwich; the Hyatt Regency Greenwich in Old Greenwich; the Hotel Delamar Southport in Southport; and The Mayflower Grace in Washington. These four winners are very different hotels, from the expansive atrium-style Hyatt Regency Greenwich, to the superbly intimate country retreat of The Mayflower Grace.
Chef Thomas Henkelmann’s beloved restaurant at The Homestead Inn also snagged Four Diamonds, as did Chef Rebecca Kirhoffer of the always excellent Rebeccas in Greenwich.
Along the shoreline, it’s no surprise that Saybrook Point Inn & Spa in Old Saybrook took Four Diamonds. SPI is one of the finest leisure spots in the region, with its amazing Fresh Salt restaurant and Sanno Spa, beautiful rooms and scenic waterfront location. It’s a perennial favorite. Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket received Four Diamonds for Grand Pequot Tower at Foxwoods and The Fox Tower, each offering a unique vibe within a consistent experience that has made Foxwoods a red-hot entertainment, dining and shopping paradise.
AAA inspectors visit more than 28,000 establishments across the U.S., Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean. Less than half a percent of those reviewed receives the prestigious Five Diamond Award; while 5.7% receive a Four Diamond.
