Have you ever found yourself entranced with a painting? One that has drawn you into that moment in time it has captured perfectly; brushed with just the right light, in just the right way? If you’ve ever visited Susan Powell Fine Art Gallery’s famed Annual Holiday Show you’ve most likely experienced this scenario. Offering a wide array of distinguished art to choose from, Susan Powell’s exhibits promise a little something for every art lover on the shoreline and beyond.
Flooded with natural light from the store front picture window, Powell’s gallery, located in downtown Madison, is home to eight different shows per year, but it’s the Annual Holiday Show that many art connoisseurs and their families look forward to, because, as Powell’s website states, “…original art is the perfect thoughtful and personal gift.”
“We’ve held this show for the past 15 years and many of our visitors wait for it as they like to buy unique pieces for their own collections, or as holiday gifts for loved ones,” says Powell, who has had a lifetime of experience in the world of art. Growing up in a home in which both parents were involved in the arts, Powell was educated from an early age, honing her artistic passion, and developing her career in art over the past 35 years.
With a trained eye for what will be most attractive to prospective buyers, Powell has handpicked each of the forty diverse artists who are permanent participants at her Gallery. For the Holiday show, Powell augments this stable of talented artists and invites new artists to see how their work appeals to her clients. She looks for passion, consistency and a unique perspective when scouting new talent. “I invited artist Jeanne Rosier Smith into the holiday show this year and now she is one of our gallery artists. We have already sold five of her paintings. People have responded very enthusiastically to her work,” said Powell.
Smith, who is known for her pastel seascapes is a signature member of the Pastel Society of America, the American Society of Marine Artists, the Connecticut Pastel Society and the Pastel Painters Society of Cape Cod, an International Association of Pastel Societies Masters Circle member, and a juried artist member of the Copley Society, the Salmagundi Club, and Academic Artists of America.
Also part of the annual 75 works on view is artist Anne McGrory. “Anne is remarkable, she paints a variety of birds, animals, shells and flowers with an extraordinary technique, combining pastel and gold leaf. Everyone loves her work,” says Powell. Her work is striking and unique with a lustrous light that acts as a backdrop for many of her subjects.
Looking for a landscape to delve into? Hagop J. Keledjian’s painting “Winter’s Warmth” will do the trick. His oil painting depicting a snow covered landscape with a stream running through a wooded area, set aglow by the distant afternoon sun, is evocative and subtle, capturing the essence of winter.
“Art makes me happy and I enjoy looking at it everyday. I also enjoy working with the artists. I encourage people to visit museums, get an idea of what they like, so they can start truly appreciating and collecting art,” said Powell.
The Susan Powell Fine Art, Annual Holiday Show will run through January 27. The gallery is located at 679 Boston Post Road in Madison near the fire station. Hours are Tuesday through Saturday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and anytime by appointment.
