Delightful Delicious Abby’s Place in Essex CT

Abby Miner realized a lifelong dream by establishing herself as a top caterer in Essex, Connecticut over the course of 15 years. And she had another dream: to have her own charming place, with a delightful approach to comfort food, right here on the shoreline.

Abby’s Place in Essex opened six years ago, and lovers of great food still mark the day. Set adjacent to the Dauntless Boatyard in beautiful Essex along the dazzling Connecticut River, Abby’s Place offers not only wonderful breakfast, lunch, and dinner options, but gorgeous views and warm hospitality too.

Miner’s menu offers wonderfully creative spins on well-known staples. For breakfast, the orange-infused French toast is an exotic twist, while the hearty claw and knuckle crabmeat and Swiss omelet is a triumph of flavor. For lunch, it’s impossible to resist Abby’s New England Clam Chowder, Coconut Shrimp, or the outstanding salads, burgers and wraps. The dinner menu keeps the comfort food coming, offering robust entrees like the quarter pound lobster roll served with “My Mom’s Coleslaw,” the Pecan and Goat Cheese Salad, or the Lobster Mac n’ Cheese, served in a creamy lobster sauce tossed with gemelli pasta and garnished with chives.

It’s an elevated form of approachable, familiar cuisine that everyone can enjoy. But Miner’s vision and sheer talent with “ordinary” dishes is what has put Abby’s Place on the culinary map in coastal Connecticut.

As you enjoy the mouth-watering dishes in this lovely eatery, you’d think this was always a bustling restaurant. Not so. To achieve her dream, Miner refurbed the former establishment to create an airy new family-friendly space with more local color than an Edward Hopper painting. Joined by her mother (who she describes as a “fabulous cook”), Miner is following in a family tradition. Having grown up on an organic farm in Connecticut, it’s no wonder she cooks with locally sourced fresh meats and produce.

“Using the freshest and finest ingredients has always been important to me,” says Miner, who is the head chef, sole owner and general overseer. “I think it really comes through in everything we serve.” Known as much for their breathtaking views as for their excellent food, Abby’s Place has become something of a shoreline icon. Taking in the morning sun on the restaurant’s spacious patio, the Essex resident puts it simply: “Wonderful food, gorgeous scenery. It doesn’t get any better than this.”

As Miner waters the hanging flower baskets along the entrance to Abby’s Place, she muses about her good fortune, and the growing popularity of her kitchen. “We took a chance. All restaurants do,” she says. “Taking that chance is part of the experience. We just passed our fifth year, and I couldn’t be more excited about where we’re headed.”

With an ideal location just walking distance from the heart of beautiful downtown Essex, and a foolproof menu of classic American staples, Abby’s Place is the essence of casual waterfront dining open year round. It is also the perfect summer dining spot.
